At times I am blue. Why would that be? We all
have so many blessings for which to be thankful. I have personally been so
blessed, and am happily content. Whenever I feel that I am dwelling on current
trials rather than those numerous blessings, I go to the Word of God.
Philippians 4:8-9
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever
is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is
admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever
you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into
practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
Those are very encouraging words. Paul continues with:
Philippians 4:10-13
10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed
your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to
show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be
content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I
know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in
any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty
or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
We are encouraged to keep our “good names”, demonstrations
of our love for God and Christ, avoiding situations that will compromise our
reputations. Our actions influence others, so we should consider how
“impure” actions will affect those around us. Paul had to overcome the
bad reputation he had developed prior his conversion to Christ.
As Saul, he had acted with the backing of the Jewish government to
exterminate the Christian influence that was escalating. Once Paul was able to
demonstrate the change Christ had made in his life, he became a very effective
tool in spreading the Gospel, exponentially.
When we are blue, one thing that buoys us is an unexpected
visit from an old friend. The Word of God is comparable to a “visit from an old
friend”, and provides a welcome lift to the soul.
Dear God: Please help me to demonstrate my love
for you and your son each day. Help me to remember my blessings rather
than worrying about daily trials.
